Living on the river bend
LeClaire sits right on the Mississippi's bend, and the river keeps its own schedule. Fog off the water holds moisture on the glass until late morning, and damp glass holds dust. Riverfront and Riverview homes dirty fastest.
Open ground up the hill
Eagle Ridge and the Pebble Creek side sit up on open, wind-swept ground. Planting and harvest season push fine field dust onto everything facing south and west.
Older glass downtown
The downtown and Cody Hill blocks have the town's oldest windows — wood sashes, wavy original glass, exterior storms. Beautiful, and not something you hand to somebody with a pressure washer.
Downtown and the riverfront blocks
The older homes and storefronts along Cody Road and up Cody Hill are the reason people visit this town, and they take a little more patience than a new build. Original single-pane glass ripples when you look across it — that is the glass doing its hundred-year job, and it is worth keeping. We clean it by hand, with no pressure and nothing caustic near old glazing putty.
Storms come down one at a time, get labeled, get washed on both faces, and go back in the opening they came out of. It is slower than a modern subdivision. That is fine. Nobody moved to a house like this because they were in a hurry.
Eagle Ridge, Pebble Creek and the hill
Up the hill the houses are newer, taller and glassier, and the wind has nothing to slow it down. Two stories with walkout lower levels are normal here, which puts the back of the house a long way off the ground — comfortably inside water-fed pole range, uncomfortably outside what most homeowners want to do on a ladder.
The other thing the hill gets is dust. Planting in the spring and harvest in the fall put a fine tan film on south and west glass that rain does not rinse — it just moves it around. Two cleanings a year, late spring and after harvest, keeps ahead of it.
