Why Quad Cities gutters fail in the same two seasons

The metro is full of mature silver maples, oaks and cottonwoods, and they drop twice. Helicopter seeds and catkins come down in late spring and pack into the trough as a dense mat, then the leaf drop in October fills whatever is left. A gutter that spilled once in June is usually a solid plug by November.

Winter is what turns a clogged gutter into a repair bill. Standing water freezes, backs up under the shingle edge, and refreezes at the fascia. That is how ice dams start, and how soffit and trim rot begins on the shaded north side of a house. Cleaning in fall is not maintenance for its own sake — it is the cheapest thing you can do to avoid a winter water problem inside the wall.

Ground-level damage matters too. Overflow lands in one spot instead of running out the downspout, and that concentrated drip erodes mulch beds, splashes soil up onto siding, and pushes water down against the foundation exactly where you do not want it.

How we clean gutters

• Walk the roofline and note the trouble spots — valleys, inside corners and downspout heads fill first.
• Debris removed by hand from the trough, not blown into your landscaping.
• Downspouts flushed with water until they run free; blockages cleared from the bottom elbow up.
• Hangers, spikes and seams checked while we are up there, and anything loose or leaking gets pointed out to you.
• Everything bagged and hauled away, gutters and driveway rinsed, ground left clean.
• Before and after photos texted to you if you are at work.

How often, and when

Two visits a year suits most homes here: once in late spring after the seed drop, and once in late fall once the leaves are actually down. Homes with mature trees directly overhead, or with gutter guards that are catching debris on top, often want a third pass mid-summer.

If you only do one a year, make it November. Going into the freeze with a clear trough is worth more than any other single cleaning.
