Century-old wood sashes
Through the Broadway district and the streets around Augustana, most windows are original wood with exterior storms. The glazing putty is old and brittle, so pressure and harsh chemistry are the wrong tools here.
Coal-era brick and limestone
Older masonry sheds fine dust and, on the bluff streets, limestone runoff carries mineral straight down the face of the building onto ground-floor glass.
Bluff shade and mature oaks
Longview Park and Highland Park streets are heavily shaded. Slow-drying north elevations mean more biological film on siding and along the bottom edge of the panes.
The windows in this town have already survived a lot
A Broadway district house may still be wearing its original single-pane glass. You can spot it by the slight ripple in the reflection — that wave is a hallmark of older glass, and it is worth keeping. It is also thinner and less forgiving than modern insulated units, and the putty holding it in has spent decades in Illinois weather.
That is why nothing about our work here is aggressive. No pressure washing near glazing, no caustic chemicals, no forcing a storm window that has swelled into its frame. Storms come down slowly, get labeled so they go back into the opening they came out of, and get washed on both faces while they are off.
What usually turns out to be the real problem
Homeowners in older Rock Island houses often call us thinking the windows are shot. Sometimes they are. More often three separate things are being mistaken for one.
The first is film on the inside of the storm, not on the primary window — you have been cleaning the wrong pane. The second is grit and old paint chips packed into the track and weep holes, which holds water against the sill and looks like rot starting. Gutters and siding on an older house
The oaks around Longview and Highland Park are magnificent and they will fill a half-round gutter by the end of October. On older homes that matters more than it does on new construction, because overflowing gutters run down wood trim and soffit that was never designed to stay wet.
Siding gets the same careful treatment as the glass. Painted wood clapboard and century brick get a low-pressure soft wash with detergent that kills the algae rather than a pressure stream that drives water into joints and lifts paint. It is slower. It is also the only method that does not cost you a repaint two years later.

- Storms add labor, so they are counted in the quote — but they are not a surprise line item and they are not a reason for us to decline the job. A large share of our Rock Island work involves them.
- Is it safe to clean hundred-year-old glass?
- Yes, with the right method. We use no pressure and no caustic chemistry near old glazing, and we handle sashes and storms by hand. If putty is failing badly on a particular sash we will point it out and leave that one alone rather than risk the pane.
