Why Quad Cities glass gets dirty faster than you would expect

Living in a river valley has a cost, and your windows pay part of it. Humidity coming off the Mississippi keeps north and east elevations damp long into the morning, and damp glass holds dust instead of shedding it. Add in the agricultural dust that drifts in from the fields around Geneseo, Coal Valley and Milan during planting and harvest, and the fine grit thrown off I-74 and John Deere Road, and glass that looked fine in April is hazy by July.

The bigger problem is mineral content. Water here is hard. Every time a sprinkler head clips a window, or rain splashes back off a concrete walk onto a ground-floor pane, the water evaporates and the calcium stays. Do that for a couple of seasons and the deposit stops being a film sitting on the glass and starts etching into it. At that point no amount of soap fixes it — it needs mechanical restoration, which costs far more than the cleanings that would have prevented it.

Then winter arrives. Freeze-thaw cycles pull moisture through window seals and leave a grey film along the bottom of the glass and in the tracks. Homeowners often assume the windows themselves are failing. Usually they are just dirty in a way a household glass cleaner cannot touch.

Our process, step by step

The method matters more than the muscle. Here is exactly what happens when we are at your home.

• Walk the property first. We count panes, note stories, check for cracked seals, stuck screens and pre-existing hard-water etching, and point them out to you before we start so nothing is a surprise afterward.
• Protect the ground. Beds, mulch and furniture get moved or covered. Sprinklers off. Nothing leans against your gutters at any point in the job.
• Screens out and washed. Screens are removed, labeled by opening, scrubbed with a soft brush, rinsed and set to dry while we work the glass.
• Exterior glass, deionized water, water-fed pole. Tap water runs through carbon and resin filtration until every dissolved solid is gone. A soft carbon-fiber brush agitates the glass and frame while pure water rinses. Because the rinse water contains nothing, it dries leaving nothing.
• Interior glass by hand. Inside we work traditionally — mop, blade and detail cloth, edge to edge, with sills wiped and tracks vacuumed.
• Screens back, final walk-through. Screens return to the openings they came out of, and we walk the exterior with you in the light before we leave.

Why the deionized water-fed pole system matters

Traditional window cleaning on a second story means a ladder against your fascia, a worker at full extension, and a squeegee pass that has to be perfect the first time because hot glass dries faster than you can correct it. That is where streaks come from, and where injuries and gutter dents come from.

A water-fed pole reaches the upper story from the ground. There is no ladder resting on your gutter line, no boot prints in the landscaping under your bay window, and no weight on soft spring soil. Just as importantly, there is no squeegee: the glass is rinsed and left to dry on its own, which only works if the water is genuinely pure. That is the whole point of deionization. Ordinary hose water dries into the exact spotting you hired someone to remove.

What is included — and what is not

Included in a standard residential window cleaning:

• Exterior glass on all accessible windows, including upper stories
• Interior glass when interior service is booked
• Screen removal, cleaning and reinstallation
• Frame and sill wipe-down, track vacuuming on interior service
• Spot-checking and a final walk-through with you

Not included as standard, quoted separately when you need it:

• Hard-water and mineral etching restoration
• Paint, stucco, mortar or construction debris removal after a remodel
• Skylights and interior glass above stairwells requiring specialty access
• Storm window disassembly on older homes
• Windows behind permanently sealed or painted-shut interior fixtures

Signs it is time to book

• Light through the window looks flat or milky, especially in the late afternoon
